This One Will Make You Think...

I was recently listening to a podcast with Jack Kornfield, a buddhist monk and one of the key teachers to introduce Buddhist mindfulness practices to the west. He relates a beautiful story on the importance of perception which I will paraphrase below.

While out on a walk with his zen master they came across a boulder. Jack’s teacher looked at him and asked “Is that boulder heavy?” to which Jack immediately replied “Yes master”. Jack’s teacher smiled and with emphasis replied “Not if you don’t pick it up”.

Everyone might take away something different from this story. Sometimes what we see or read makes us feel weighed down with anxiety and fear; give yourself permission to witness it, but never feel like you have to shoulder the entire load on your own.

Quick Tip: If you want to watch the news, consider watching it once a day or for 10 minGet your hit and make a switch. Ask yourself, “what do I need right now? If its the news, watch the news. If its hope, reassurance and comfort, call a friend, loved one or our office, we are here for you.
