Five things I wished I had known sooner about emotional intelligence
Written by Dr. Shahana Alibhai and a follow up from her Global TV news segment on whole person health.
1. Emotions are just “energy in motion”. There is no such thing as a “bad” or “good” emotion. It is our judgement of ourselves having a particular emotion. For example, how often are we anxious because we are worried?
2. Emotions have a beginning, middle and end. Most of us get ‘stuck’ in the middle of a big emotion (fear, anger, frustration, guilt) and instead of labelling it and understanding it we repress or suppress it. Think of it is “stuffing it down” -into our low back, into our neck and shoulders or our stomachs because ignoring it or avoiding it is likely the easier and safer option
3. For most of us, anxiety is being trapped in the future while depression is being trapped in the past. In either state, you feel “stuck”
4. Most of us have only 3 adjectives we use to express our emotions “bad, glad and sad”. It is no wonder why we struggle to RECOGNIZE and LABEL our emotions.
5. Download the Mood Meter app - this is fantastic app to start recognizing, understanding and labelling our energy and emotional states. The science is based on the book “Permission to Feel” by the Director of the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence, Dr. Marc Brackett
We are here for you. Have a blessed weekend.
