5 For Friday!

I wanted to share an inspiring exercise from my wife Dr. Shahana Alibhai. Here are her words for you:

I struggled with my anxiety this week. Familiar patterns of thinking seemed to re-emerge, eager to gain traction again.

My experience is not unique. In fact, where struggles with our mental health were stigmatized and divisive not long ago, now, ironically enough, they might be one of the only things that we find common ground on.

I want to share something that helped me this week. All I ask is that you try this before you decide whether you like it or not. It’s called Compassion Meditation.

Simply find a quiet area to sit, close your eyes and bring to focus someone that you care a great deal for. Envision this person as clearly as you can. Now repeat to yourself phrases like “May you be well and happy” or “May you be free of pain and sorrow”.

Then shift your focus to yourself. Try to connect with yourself and offer this same compassion inwards. Tell yourself “May I be well and happy” or whatever phrase feels best then

Repeat this then for someone you might find difficult or that is a challenge for you in your life right now

Then turn your attention to someone to someone you don’t know, like the cashier at the grocery story or the delivery driver

Finally you offer this to everyone in the world, wherever they might live, no matter their background and offer this to them “May you all be free of sorrow and pain. May you all be well and happy”

Please try this and let us know what you think. We hope it brings you some calm amidst the chaos.

Have a blessed weekend,
